'How To Keep Safe...' System

One of the most important things we can do for our children is keeping them safe; not just physically – but mentally safe, in a good place. There are all kinds of things going on in the world that are scary, both for us as adults and for our children. We may think we shield our children from much of this, and some of us do – but to what extent?

We often underestimate what children absorb, and sometimes we avoid those difficult conversations – because we don’t want to worry or scare them. But if we talk about our worries, if we share them, if we HAVE A PLAN and everyone KNOWS THE RIGHT THING TO DO, well, it makes us stronger. It gives us power and it reassures and eases worry and anxiety.

Stories are a great way of addressing potentially difficult topics, and opening up communication about thoughts and feelings. This book, with its gentle rhyming story, provides a simple, positive and constructive way to start to open up those conversations. The topics covered are home fire, getting lost and terrorist type events.

The workbook deals with aspects of the book – safety/having a plan/feelings and is suitable for children aged 7 – 9 years. The exercises are designed to equip the child with skills in five areas that all have an impact on our level of happiness and foster a positive mindset. Children learn how to:

  • Focus on the positive – If we have a plan we are safer and less worried/let’s make plans together!
  • Ask for help
  • Know what to do to keep safe in certain situations
  • Recognise the feelings of worry/anxiety
  • Use the vocabulary of anxiety and worry to explain their feelings
  • Understand gratitude – and how it can help us feel happier

The 5 lessons are time-flexible and can be given can be delivered as appropriate. The Scheme of Work is linked to PSHE criteria. Resources available are:
