“THIS IS NATURAL HISTORY FOR THE DIGITAL AGE, ALLOWING PEOPLE TO EXPLORE THE STORY OF LIFE ON EARTH AND SHARE THEIR FAVOURITE NATURAL HISTORY MOMENTS WITH THE WORLD” SIR DAVID ATTENBOROUGH.
I know that we are all trying to cut down on, and limit, our children’s screen time, for really good reasons. However, if we make sure that any screen time we give our children is quality time, there is less chance of hindering child development and a good chance that children will be learning and actively engaging in a positive manner.
I am hugely impressed with a new app, recently launched by BBC Earth. The Story of Life is a free app featuring the largest ever digital release of Sir David Attenborough’s amazing work over many years.
The app features more than 1,000 of the most memorable moments filmed during his incredible career of natural history film-making. Us older people will remember his incredible interaction with mountain gorillas in Life on Earth and the latest films including the newly hatched lizard chased by hundreds of racer snakes. The app invites people to explore this and other films featuring hundreds of animals, places and stories. There are also some exclusive, never-before-seen films hidden throughout the app to encourage everyone to explore, with more clips being added in the future.
SO HOW DOES THE APP WORK?
The controls feature a simple touch dial which allows videos to be searched for by ‘Habitat’, ‘Species’ and ‘Behaviour’, or alphabetically. It is quick and easy to find out more about favourite creatures, or explore planet earth. Controls are easily understood and incredibly easy to use. Favourites can be collected for easy access. Other features allow the user to go behind the scenes of new filming techniques and journey with Sir David himself as he flies 10,000 feet into the sky in a hot air balloon. This app is a great way for children to explore and discover our universe – from the smallest creature under the microscope, to the infinite expanses of space. It brings the child face to face with heart pounding action, mind blowing ideas and the wonder of being human. It’s AMAZING!!
HERE ARE A FEW IDEAS FOR LEARNING:
- Ask the child to find an animal beginning with the letter ‘B’
- Ask the child if they can find an animal beginning with the letter ‘B’, that lives in the desert
- Ask the child -what does this animal eat to survive?
You could do the above with any letter of the alphabet. Or:
- Make a project book about favourite animals or places
- Get your child to make a ‘favourites’ collection within the app and ask them what they like about each video/animal/habitat/behaviour
Enjoy it – I still am!
